Host family Düker will be happy to take you into the house vineyards in fine weather and explain everything about the top sites to you during a relaxed walk, led by the Escherndorfer Lump and the Volkacher Ratsherrn. These two steep vineyards set the benchmark for demanding viticulture with the utmost care. Low rainfall and long growing seasons, combined with consistent yield restriction, make it possible to bottle truly great wines and proudly serve them to Schwane guests. Afterwards, the wines can be tasted in the wine cellar - and then, in complete comfort, you can stay overnight in your own Schwane room.

Prime locations Our vineyards
Our wines grow in some of Franconia's most renowned vineyard sites: the Volkacher Ratsherr, the Escherndorfer Lump and the Escherndorfer Fürstenberg. Each of these sites is uniquely shaped by steep slopes, mineral shell limestone soils and a special microclimate that offers the vines optimum conditions.
The Volkacher Ratsherr (VDP. Große Lage) around the pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten stands for sheltered warmth and fine minerality. The Escherndorfer Lump (VDP. Große Lage), with gradients of up to 70 %, is one of Franconia's most distinctive vineyards and produces expressive wines with character. The Escherndorfer Fürstenberg (VDP. Erste Lage) complements these top sites with the best conditions for elegant and lasting wines. These special vineyards are the foundation of our Schwane wines and reflect the diversity and tradition of Franconian viticulture.
History & Heritage of the Winery
Wine tradition since 1404. The history of the Schwane dates back to 1404. At that time, the founding Schwan family welcomed travellers from near and far at their inn directly opposite the parish church in Volkach. From the wish to serve guests their own wines, the winery “Zur Schwane” developed over time.
In the 1930s, the Pfaff family took over the long-established business and has continued its history to this day. Christian Kallisch and cellar master Stefan Ott are responsible for the cultivation and development of the distinctive Franken wines across around 30 hectares of vineyards. In 2004, the Schwane was already celebrating its 600th anniversary.
VDP. Membership
Quality with origin – a VDP member since 1992. For over 30 years, Schwane has belonged to the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP). The focus is on wines that reflect their origin and the special terroir of the Mainschleife – from the characterful VDP.Ortswein to the outstanding VDP.GROSSEN LAGE. The range is complemented by the fruity-fresh wines of the Fünf Freunde+ line, sparkling sparkling wines and house-distilled spirits from the in-house distillery.

An overnight stay at a winery combines a short break, enjoyment and an authentic wine experience. Guests experience Franconian wine culture directly on site, stay overnight among vineyards and can enjoy regional wines where they are produced. Many winegrowers also offer wine tastings, tours or personal recommendations for excursions. The Schwane also organises great wine experiences such as the Main-Genuss-Trai.
The wine region around the Mainschleife here in Volkach is particularly popular. But Iphofen, Sommerach or Würzburg are also suitable for stays on vineyards and day trips.
Yes, many wineries offer wine tastings directly on the premises. Guests can get to know various Franconian wines, learn more about viticulture, and discover the special features of the regional grape varieties.

Franken is worth a trip at any time of year. The months from spring to autumn are particularly popular, when hikes through the vineyards, wine tastings outdoors and regional events are possible. The grape harvest in autumn also offers a special experience.
It is advisable to book early – especially at weekends, during the grape harvest and while popular wine festivals are taking place. Guests should also check whether services such as breakfast, wine tasting, parking or special arrangements are included.
Among the best-known and best vineyard sites in Franken are, among others, the Volkacher Ratsherr, the Escherndorfer Lump and the Würzburger Stein. These sites stand for high-quality Franconian wines, shaped by special soils, ideal conditions and a long wine-growing tradition. Two of these three renowned vineyard sites are located right by our hotel.
Right in and around Volkach, there are around 2000 hectares of vineyards alone at the Volkacher Mainschleife.
